Drawn from Life: People on Paper

This week, we are looking at 2016’s Drawn From Life: People on Paper. the image above is Reconstruction, by Barbara Hepworth, 1947.

This exhibition brought together some of the finest drawings in the Arts Council Collection (with loans from the British Council Collection), including work from Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and David Hockney.

It was particularly special for us as this was the catalyst and inspiration behind the gallery starting to run its own complementary art courses, which still run to this day! Often delivered by visual artist Gill Cowley, our main art courses occupy the gallery on Wednesdays and are known as the Wednesday art Group (a.m. course) and The Sumner Art Sessions (p.m. workshops).

As the gallery prides itself on always offering a robust public and educational programme, the exhibition was additionally complemented by a range of school workshops exploring the human form using clay, and led by ceramicist Kirsti Brown (an artist who we regularly invite back as part of our ‘Crafted’ exhibitions.)
